Sew it goes...

A new shirt -- Stats: PATTERN - New Look 6407
FABRIC - woven, non-stretch 100% cotton
ALTERATIONS to pattern - lengthened torso, narrowed shoulders (but maybe not enough - sigh)
BUTTONS - vintage (maybe 1940's?) medical uniform buttons - think high-necked Ben Casey type shirts (oooh, just dated myself with that cultural reference!)

There was supposed to be a cute cotton skirt to go with it. Hah! I was attempting a side-wrapped straight skirt from an OOP Stretch & Sew pattern. It was easy to sew, fit well, looked good...until I tried to walk in it, and then it made a silly little 'tent' with each step - not a good look! Ah well, sew it goes...

Meanwhile, take a look at these cute little zippers from Japan - (click makes bigger)

Hopefully there's enough detail for you to make out the cute little zipper pulls on the outer zips (that's scissors and a vintage sewing machine) and how the center zip has lacy edges (not as easy to see, sorry!). Found them while reading another blog - they're from an Etsy seller in Japan. Leave a comment if you're interested in knowing who/where and I may be kind enough to look it up for you. I don't have a clue what I'll use them for, but I couldn't resist!

Great blouse! I love blouses but they seem like a lot of work to me. I love the scarf you made too. Very nice. How are your machines working? They all look so neat!

Thanks Mary Sarah -- the blouses are getting easier the more I do them -- still not the quick and easy of a tee shirt though! Loving the vintage machines -- just finished painting the handwheel and crank of the green 185 -- looks better than the black I think.

I am currently working with a very similar pattern from McCalls... It is my theory that shirts like this are supposed to have a shoulder line right at the shoulder, not dropped (The 80's being in our past, right?) and I do not know what kind of linebackers these ladies blouse patterns are being made for! I have to move each shoulder in about an inch and a HALF on one...

Your thoughts?

Griffinitter - Sounds like you may have narrow shoulders too. One thing I keep meaning to do is to work with a pattern based on upper bust measurement, rather than full bust (which is the measurement I've used in the past). Allegedly that would fit better in the neck/shoulder region, but would require adjustment for more room lower down -- 'cause we know gaping buttons are no nicer looking than droopy shoulder lines! So far (laziness, maybe?) I've been just trying to take the excess off from the shoulder, but next time... Good luck to you with your issues too -- I know how hard it is!
